Thursday:
Colour me stunned, the Conservatories held the safest Conservatory seat in the country.
Yes, I am disappointed not to get brilliant Mr Stephen into parliament, but this is a good sign for the future. i.e. we've still got one!
Despite HYSTERICAL coverage from the Grauniad trying to distract attention, and their results list giving the Conservatories a majority of 74% by overlooking the Liberal Democrats entirely (how strangely TYPICAL of the tribally NewLabour Grauniad), the Liberal Democrat vote held up pretty well against the Conservatories at full flood.
So the big story was the Labour receiving just 1066 votes and losing their deposit.
Ignoring the effects of CHURN for the moment, what has happened is this: the Labour have lost about ELEVEN percentage points. Two points went to us – hooray! Two points were scattered among the usual Monster Raving and fringe candidates. The Greens and the UKPNuts were pretty unchanged. But somewhat distressingly, the rest of the Labour vote appears to have split pretty evenly between the Conservatories and the BNP.
Statistically, because their vote share gained MORE than ours did, this is described as a swing from Liberal Democrat to Conservatory. And Mr Balloon has been bragging about it. But it's not a very IMPRESSIVE swing you have there, Mr Balloon.
The Conservatory lead in vote share over us went up from 27.5% to 29.1%, an increase of 1.6% which I believe is a SWING of only 0.8% - possibly enough to net him Romsey and Cheltenham from us in a general election.
And don't let's kid ourselves that he won't be trying – and spending those Ashcroft millions too – to take those seats.
But frankly, with everyone's vote DOWN except the people who didn't stand at all last time, it's just as possible that the whole Labour vote simply stayed at home, and that ALL of the BNP support came directly from the Conservatories, say.
The only lessons we can really learn from this by-election and from the one in Crewe and Nantwich is that the Conservatories are doing well at the moment, but whether in second or third, whether it's a Labour seat or a Conservatory one, the Liberal vote is actually pretty solid, and no matter where you are, nobody wants to vote for Mr Frown.
This must be a HUMILIATING first anniversary as Prime Monster for Mr Frown, for the Labour to come behind the British Nasty Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the British Nasty Party.
Of course they are trying to put a brave face on it, trying to put the blame on the current state of the British economy (author, a Mr G Frown… oops).

Day 2519: Why the Oxford Union is Right about Free Speech
Saturday:
Mr Jonny makes the case for Freedom of Speech applying to people we would rather not hear. But I want to go further.
Free Speech is not, and cannot, JUST be about the right to say things that other people find objectionable; it must ALSO include our right to HEAR what is said, so that we can REBUT it.
When something is PARTICULARLY POISONOUS, it is more important than ever that it BE rebutted. But how can you make a COUNTER ARGUMENT if you pretend that it doesn’t exist? Worse, how will anyone even THINK of a counter argument it if you stop them from knowing what is being said?
A case in point takes place at the Oxford Union this week.
The Oxford Union – a students’ junior House of Commons debating club, not to be confused with the Oxford University Students’ Union – are hosting a Free Speech Forum. The guests include leader of the British Nasty Party, Mr Nick Griffin, and Mr David Irving who can best be described as a “storyteller” (since the word “historian” is usually used to describe people who describe events that are true). These invites have been triggered outrage and protests from the University’s Jewish Society and the Oxford University Students’ Union – a students’ welfare organisation not to be confused with the Oxford Union.
The policies of the British Nasty Party – that all the ills of the country can be blamed on the immigration of people from other countries, especially if they are of a different colour – are not just wrong, they are stupid and short sighted and amazingly ill-thought out and people need very much to know what they ARE.
And not least because we should be able to spot it when, sometimes, more ELECTABLE parties might try to hint at policies from that agenda too.
Making up a version of the past where the German Nasty Party somehow did not set out deliberately to murder millions of Jews and gypsies and gay daddies and Slavs and disabled people and pretty much anyone else they thought were looking at them funny, is just AMAZINGLY offensive, and people need to know that attempts to airbrush genocide out of history are being made.
And not least because we should be able to spot it when, sometimes, more RESPECTABLE organisations might try to forget some of the people on that list too.
The call to “just not invite” these people overlooks the obvious: even it WE refuse to listen to them, SOME people will. Forcing them “underground” and making “martyrs” of them only ADDS to their sinister CACHET.
Rather than sticking our fingers in our ears, we should be using them to POINT and LAUGH.

Day 1930: Scary Story
Sunday:
I have heard in the news from Mrs MARGARET HEDGEHOG, Barking MP and Queen Mum lookee-likee. She is saying that some of the people who used to vote for HER have been TEMPTED by the BNP. (The BNP are the BRITISH NASTY PARTY, but do not be confused this is nothing to do with Mr Balloon.)
The media LOVE this, because for them the BNP are like having our very own bunch of the KU KLUX KLAN rather than a bunch of SAD LOSERS who have nothing to say but:
"It's {insert who we hate today here}'s fault".
The papers can then re-run all their exciting stories about GOOSE-STEPPING Nazis and how PLUCKY BRITAIN (© all newspapers) doesn't stand for THAT KIND OF THING. Oooh, aren't they NASTY, but don't the uniforms look kind of KINKY (full story with pictures pages 2-12).
The real story, though, is that the Labour are ALWAYS pulling this stunt. Whenever the Labour think that they are in trouble in elections they play their own version of the race card: "ooo-OOO-ooo vote for us of the HAIRY HOB-GOBLINS will come and get you/your family/your sort". Which, if you THINK about it, is JUST as much putting people into a box labelled by their COLOUR.
Of course, all that they ever achieve is that they give the BNP a shot in the arm of free publicity. Of course, that is part of the plan – if they extra publicity means that BNPeople are elected then the Labour can say "we were right! We warned you and you didn't listen" and then they get a big warm rush of support at the next election, to GET THEM OUT (even though it was really the Labour's fault they got in in the first place!).
The Labour and the BNP actually have the SAME problem. (No, not Mr Blair this time.) It is that NEITHER of them can think of a positive reason to vote for them. So instead, BOTH of them come up with someone SCARY who is supposed to be SO FRIGHTENING that you have to vote for them because NO ONE else will come and SAVE YOU.
REALLY, you should be able to ask people to vote for you because of the GOOD THINGS that you stand for, things like: working hard for the community; listening to people (yes, ALL of the people, even those who spoil their nice cars by sticking UNION JACKS to the radio aerials); getting things sorted (like taking the poor dead cars away to the dear car cemetery); or helping to clean things up with better RECYCLING and GREEN SPACES.
You should not need to blame other people. You should not need to be SCARY!
Of course, it does not help that the Labour have been doing the BNP's job for them by trying to make out that POOR HOMELESS PEOPLE (who only want to come here so they won't be MURDERED by their OWN governments and/or Mr Blair's friends in the US army) are some kind of RAMPAGING GANG of killer zombies.
It suits Mr Blair down to the ground to have people be scared of immigrants and refugees (even though we live in the richest safest nicest country in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD!). The More SCARED you people are, the STUPIDER you seem to get – almost stupid enough to believe some of the GUFF that Mr Blair and Mrs Hedgehog come out with!
